Today Mandy Hiscocks, political prisoner, community activist, blog writer and all around cool person is spending her birthday at Vanier Correctional Facility for woman. The state in all its wisdom has decreed that to be political is to be a criminal and mandy, a political person if I ever knew one is locked up in prison for no other reason then her politics and the fact that the state wants to make her an example of what happeneds if you are political.
Since she has been in prison the state and there agents have done what the could to break her spirits and in the process destroy someone who has dedicated there whole life to the movement.
Instead of achieving this, the state has put her in a place where her skills as an organizor and problem solver are badly needed, prison where people who are marginalized, racialized and attacked are warehoused.
Those of us who support Mandy know that while she is in there she is not only refusing to break but is also an inspiration to other inmates who rarely get to come in contact with someone who not only hates the system but resists and organizes to change it.
On Mandys Birthday I want her to know that us on the outside have not forgotten her, or her sacrifice that she has made to the movement. We look to her example for strength and courage and hope we may be as valiant and defiant when they come for us!!!
