Non-Violent Direct Action Workshop
A brief introduction to some practical skills
Occupy Kitchener site at Victoria Park Island Gazeebo, Monday October 15th, 7pm
This is just a tiny intro. It might even be fun.
Acting directly to address injustices is a key component of a healthy society. Non-Violent Direct Action (NVDA) is a term that represents a huge range of skills, practices and philosophies that enable people to oppose injustice. An understanding of NVDA provides a fundamental skill set for those who seek to change our world for the better.
In this workshop we will simply begin to explore some basics of public protest. We’ll discuss issues of accountability and autonomy amongst those rallying together. I hope that this discussion will offer us space to grow in our capacity to work as a nurturing and supportive ‘body’. We’ll also examine the context(s) of our own work to erode injustice.
Attendees will be offered the chance to participate in a non-violent direct action in the days following the workshop. The action will oppose the economic injustice of the Provincial Liberals budget for 2012.
This is a kid friendly workshop, with apologize for the evening schedule.
Planned location is accessible by a wide, arched bridge and is close to the bus terminal.
Washrooms in park are marked as gender specific.
We will do all we can for folks to feel secure. That may include group travel through the park after dark and addressing any oppressive language and behaviors.
This event costs no money.
About the presenter: Ian Stumpf believes that he has some skills in NVDA. This has been affirmed to him by others.
He’s had lots of training – for what ever that’s worth. He practices NVDA with a variety of projects including Poverty Makes Us Sick.
