Call Minister Kent and demand he respect indigenous rights!!!!

7 Aug

Call Minster Kent and tell him:
No Line 9!
Respect Indigenous Rights!
No Tar Sands in Ontario!

Late last Friday afternoon, the National Energy Board approved Phase 1 of Enbridge’s Line 9 pipeline reversal, which would bring a flood of tar sands oil into Ontario and Quebec. The same day, Enbridge spilled 1,200 barrels of oil from its aging pipeline structure in Wisconsin, a sign of what might come to the Grand River.

Enbridge has a history of spills; between 1999 and 2010 there were 804 spills that dumped 161,000 barrels of fossil fuels across its pipeline network. Line 9 is part of the same network which includes Line 6B that erupted in 2010 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Over 20,000 barrels of tar sands crude spilled in to 40KMs of pristine river.

Call Peter Kent, the Minister of Ethical Oil at (905) 886.9911 and share the following messages with him:

1. I demand that Minister Kent Respect Indigenous Rights! Both Six Nations and the Aamjiwnaang (Am-je-nong) First Nation have expressed serious concern about the pipeline reversal. These concerns have not been addressed by the National Energy Board or the Government of Canada. First Nations have the sovereign right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent regarding projects that impact their lands. Demand that Minister Kent deny the NEB approval until First Nations concerns are addressed.

2. I demand that the government act responsibly! No Line 9! Tar sands crude is much different than conventional oil. Tar sands are mixed with condensate to make ‘dilbit,’ which is more corrosive and requires high temperatures for transport. Dilbit has been described as “fast, hot, and toxic liquid sandpaper.” Line 9 was built in 1975 and was not designed to carry this toxic mix. The NEB has not addressed these problems, but rather has been approving tar sands projects, regardless of the impacts.

3. No tar sands oil, the planet is cooking! Tar sands oil emits 20% more carbon then conventional crude oil and enough natural gas is burned producing tar sands to heat 2 million Canadian homes each day. If the Minster of Ethical Oil had not noticed, 70% of the US is in severe drought and south-western Ontario farmers are experiencing similar conditions. The Greenland ice cap has melted at an unprecedented rate this summer. The facts on human induced climate change are indisputable and producing tar sands during this era of climate chaos is a death sentence for the planet.
